tumblr will find a way to be offended about anything
it’s breeding a generation of people who need to be coddled and protected from life, growing up believing that everyone should hold up a metaphorical sign saying ‘TRIGGER WARNING’ before anything that might be considered offensive (everything)
Right? I try to avoid the pussy side of Tumblr.
TRIGGER WARNING: I just used naughty language.
Trigger warnings are not intended to protect people from “offensive” things.
They are helpful, voluntary things some bloggers use to make their blog safe for people with troubled backgrounds, who may have PTSD / flashback responses to certain topics. Like allergies, we get that it is a person’s job to police themselves, avoid peanuts, for example — but sometimes it’s nice to see that little sign and know, “I can relax here, this is a place it’s safe and I don’t have to worry about someone mentioning a thing that makes my brain do flip-flops (which I am likely in therapy for and working on, thank you very much, but it’s still an issue for now).”
And I have seen way more people on Tumblr complaining about Tumblr being easily-offended than I have people actually being hyper-sensitive — or asking for trigger warnings, though these are not the same thing.
Your casual joke is fine, but it comes from a place of never having had to experience the things those trigger warnings are for.
That said, they can be overdone, and might be losing their effectiveness because of it. But that’s a separate issue.
OP is being offended by hypothetical people being offended by things the OP isn’t offended by. So there’s that, too.
