I linked to this yesterday, but had (duh) mixed the whole thing without realizing I had my headphone volume down waaaay low. The resultant mix was, in my opinion, terrible. Some parts overwhelmed others, and it all became a uniform, unuanced mess.
THIS is how I intended it. Please enjoy.
Some comforting sounds cobbled together with increasing chaos, until fire and war take over.
The debate is Nature vs Nurture vs Choice. The truth is probably a scatterplot containing all of them to some extent, with greater densities at certain points. Kinda like handedness.
But here’s my point: It shouldn’t matter. So what if it were a choice — would it then be okay to discriminate? If it were proven to be gene number 135, would bigots suddenly go, “Oh, that’s okay then.” Worked well for racial bigotry, didn’t it? And sexism?
Arguing that it’s inborn is wasting energy on what should be a non-issue in an attempt to appease people who will never be appeased. Either we’re deviants or we’re aberrations, either way, “against nature” to them.
Stop arguing on their terms. It shouldn’t matter. We should be allowed to be who we are, even if it’s a choice. And I fully believe that one day, the whole issue will fade away as surely as handedness has. No one cares anymore, so the general population is less black-and-white about it. We understand there are lots of variables, and that left to themselves, most people kinda sit somewhere in the middle, with an inborn tendency to favor on or the other. But no one gives a shit anymore. That’s the way it should be.
